Volta River Estate Ltd, also known as VREL, is a renowned company that specializes in commercial banana export operations. Established in 1988 as a collaboration between Dutch and Ghanaian partners, VREL has become a leading player in the banana industry. Located in the eastern region of Ghana, specifically in the Akwamu area, VREL operates five banana plantation sites covering approximately 380 hectares.
With a workforce of around 700 employees, VREL is committed to producing and exporting high-quality bananas while adhering to socially and environmentally responsible practices. The company is led by Directors Huub van den Broke and Anthony Blay, with the assistance of Director of Finance, Mr. Christopher Mensah Yeboah.
In 2019, VREL expanded its operations by establishing Volta River Estate Europe BV, also known as VREL Europe, in Barendrecht, the Netherlands. This subsidiary focuses on marketing the fruit to clients and potential customers in Europe and Africa. Additionally, VREL has diversified its product range to include onion and potato production and export.

Products
Volta River Estate offers a range of high-quality products:
- Volta River Estate Banana: Our bananas are grown on five sites, covering approximately 380 hectares. We employ perfect irrigation strategies, utilizing water from the Volta River and the south of Lake Volta. Our banana variety is the Cavendish banana, cultivated year-round.
- Potatoes: We also produce and export potatoes under the brand name \”Musica.\” These firm potatoes have a sweet taste and an elongated, long oval shape with yellow skin. They are versatile and suitable for both chilled and fresh industries.
- Onions: Our onion production focuses on the most common variety, which has a yellow skin and white color inside. These onions are perfect for cooking stews, baking, and pairing with fish and meat dishes. We offer different sizes ranging from 35-50 mm to 70-100 mm.
Social Responsibility Projects
Volta River Estate is committed to making a positive impact on the community. We have built three community schools with computer labs and canteens to promote education in the area.
