What happened in the 2026 GES recruitment exercise?
These are details of the exercise that has now closed. They show how the process ran, but the next exercise may use different rules.
- Announcement (1 April 2026). The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, said the Ministry had received clearance from the Ministry of Finance to recruit at least 7,000 teachers, with graduates of the 2023, 2024 and 2025 cohorts eligible[5].
- Application window. GES set the window from 10 to 17 April 2026, online through its recruitment portal[2]. The Minister later said the portal was set to close automatically once the target was reached, after more than 40,000 applications for 7,000 places[3].
- Review and shortlist. A GES statement said applications would be reviewed by 30 June and shortlisted candidates announced on 20 July 2026, with onboarding from 20 July to 31 August[6].
- Postings. On 28 July 2026, GES said regional postings were available on the recruitment portal and that posted applicants should report to their Regional Education Offices from 7 August 2026[4].
When is the next GES recruitment?
On 20 July 2026, the Minister for Education said the President and the Minister for Finance had approved the recruitment of another 16,000 teachers in two groups of 8,000, with the first window opening in November 2026 and successful applicants expected to start work in January and February 2027[1]. He said deprived districts would be prioritised.
As of 24 October 2026, GES has not published the eligibility rules, opening date or portal link for that window. Until it does, treat any date or link shared on social media as unconfirmed.
Who could apply in 2026?
The April 2026 GES notice set these requirements. Check the next notice, because they can change.
- Qualification. A Bachelor of Education degree, or a relevant first degree plus a PGDE, PGCE or Diploma in Basic Education[7].
- National Service. Applicants had to have completed National Service[2,7].
- NTC licence. Applicants had to be in good standing with the National Teaching Council (NTC) and hold a valid teaching licence[2,7].
- Cohort. The Minister said graduates of the 2023, 2024 and 2025 cohorts were eligible for the 2026 exercise[5].
- Deprived districts. Applicants had to be ready and willing to accept posting to deprived districts[2,7].
Where are GES recruitment notices published?
In 2026, applications were made online only, through the GES recruitment portal announced by GES[2]. The portal link for the next exercise has not been published. Use only these official channels:
- ges.gov.gh, the GES website, for announcements and official contacts.
- The official GES Facebook and X pages linked from the GES contact page.
Other GES portals do different jobs. The Ghana Education Digital Platform at gedp.gov.gh is an assurance and transfer portal for serving teachers and staff, not a recruitment portal, and the GES promotion portal is for staff already in service.
What documents did the 2026 application need?
The April 2026 GES statement listed these uploads. Documents could be submitted as images or PDFs[7].
- Degree or diploma certificates.
- National Service certificate.
- NTC licence.
- Ghana Card.
- A passport-size photograph.
- An active email address and phone number.
Scanning these now saves time if the next window is short. The 2026 portal closed early once the target number of applications was reached.
How do you verify an advert or appointment letter?
On 28 July 2026, GES warned applicants not to pay anyone who promises to help them get recruited, said recruitment into GES is free, and advised them to ignore calls and messages from people posing as GES officers and asking for money, and to report them to the police[4].
