Aban is a nonprofit organization based in Accra, Ghana, dedicated to empowering street girls while also addressing the issue of environmental pollution. In Ghana, the main source of safe drinking water is sachet bags, which are small plastic bags filled with water. However, due to the lack of formal waste collection, over 40 tons of these bags are thrown into the streets every day.
Unfortunately, the streets of Ghana are also home to over 30,000 youth, with one-third of them being young mothers and their babies. These street girls face various challenges, including gender-based discrimination, lack of family support, financial instability, and a lack of marketable skills. As a result, they are among the most vulnerable individuals in Ghana and contribute to the growing number of second-generation street children.
ABAN aims to combat the neglect faced by both the street girls and the environment. The organization provides the girls with shelter and comprehensive training programs, including seamstress training, business education, English, math, and life skills education. ABAN also helps the girls save money by matching their individual savings upon graduation.
One of the unique aspects of ABAN’s training program is the seamstress training, where the girls learn a marketable skill by sewing recycled sachet bags into unique handmade products. This not only provides them with a source of income but also contributes to cleaning up the environment by repurposing the plastic bags.
ABAN recognizes that each girl has her own dreams and aspirations. Therefore, the organization provides the necessary financial support and personal assistance to help these girls transition from a life on the streets to a respectable standing in society.
