University Cut-Off Points in Ghana (2026): How They Work by Programme

A clear guide to how university cut-off points work in Ghana - how the WASSCE aggregate is calculated, why cut-offs differ by programme, and typical ranges.

On this page

A cut-off point is the WASSCE aggregate of the last student admitted to a programme, so it is set by competition, not fixed in advance. Your aggregate is the sum of your best six subjects (three core plus three electives), where a lower number is better. Competitive programmes like medicine and pharmacy can demand an aggregate as strong as 6 to 8, while many programmes, and most private universities, admit on aggregates of 10 to 30.

What is a cut-off point?

A cut-off point is not a fixed pass mark. It is the aggregate score of the last applicant admitted to a given programme in a given year, which means it is set by supply and demand: the more people who apply for a limited number of places, the lower (stronger) the aggregate you need to make the cut. That is why the same programme can have a different cut-off from one year to the next, and why a course at one university can require a very different aggregate than the same course elsewhere. Understanding this is the key to applying strategically, which we cover in our guide to applying to university in Ghana.

How is the WASSCE aggregate calculated?

Your aggregate is built from six subjects: three core and three relevant electives. Admission generally requires credit passes (A1 to C6) in these six subjects, and each grade carries a number, with A1 the best. The aggregate is the sum of your best six grade numbers, so a lower aggregate reflects stronger grades (Source: University of Cape Coast admissions, 2024). For most degree programmes the three core subjects are English Language, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, and the three electives must be relevant to the programme you want. A strong aggregate opens more programmes; a mid-range one narrows your realistic choices.

Why do cut-off points differ by programme?

Cut-offs track demand and capacity. High-demand, limited-capacity programmes such as medicine, pharmacy, nursing and some engineering courses attract far more qualified applicants than they have places, which pushes their cut-offs to single digits (Source: AACRAO, 2024). Programmes with more places or fewer applicants accept higher aggregates. This is why a student with an aggregate that misses medicine might comfortably qualify for a related science or allied-health programme at the same university.

Typical aggregate ranges by programme type

Programme tierTypical aggregate neededExamples
Most competitiveAbout 6 to 8Medicine, pharmacy, some engineering
CompetitiveAbout 8 to 15Law, popular sciences, top business programmes
ModerateAbout 15 to 24Many arts, humanities and social science programmes
Accessible / privateAbout 10 to 30Many private-university programmes

These are indicative ranges drawn from published admission guidance; the exact cut-off for any programme is set each year and must be checked on the university’s own admissions page (Source: AACRAO, 2024; Pulse Ghana, 2026).

How do I use cut-off points strategically?

TRY THIS TODAY: turn your aggregate into a smart application.

  • Know your aggregate. Add your best six subject grades; that number is what programmes judge.
  • Match, do not gamble. Use your three programme choices as a spread: one ambitious, one realistic, one safe.
  • Check last year’s cut-off. It is the best guide to what a programme will likely require this year.
  • Have a plan B. A related diploma you can top up to a degree, or a private university, keeps you moving if the public cut-off just misses.

Frequently asked questions

What aggregate is good for university in Ghana?

An aggregate of 6 to 10 opens almost any programme, including the most competitive. Aggregates of 10 to 24 still qualify for a wide range of programmes, while many private-university courses admit up to around 30 (Source: AACRAO, 2024; Pulse Ghana, 2026).

What is the cut-off for medicine in Ghana?

Medicine is among the most competitive programmes and typically requires a single-digit aggregate, often around 6 to 8, though the exact figure is set each year by demand (Source: AACRAO, 2024).

Is a lower or higher aggregate better?

Lower is better. The aggregate sums your best six grade numbers, and since A1 is the smallest number, stronger grades produce a lower aggregate.

Do cut-off points change every year?

Yes. Because a cut-off is the aggregate of the last admitted student, it shifts each year with the number and strength of applicants, so always check the current figure for your programme.
