Akyem is an open-pit gold mine in Ghana’s Eastern Region. It produced 204,000 ounces of gold in 2024, down from 295,000 ounces in 2023, when it was operated by Newmont.
In April 2025, China’s Zijin Mining completed a deal worth up to US$1 billion to acquire Akyem from Newmont, and now operates the mine through its subsidiary Gold Source International. Ghana’s Parliament ratified the related mining lease, with the final payment made in mid-2025.
Akyem is owned by Zijin Mining Group, which completed its purchase from Newmont in April 2025. The Government of Ghana holds a 10 percent carried interest.
Akyem produced about 204,000 ounces of gold in 2024 (6.4 tonnes). It uses a conventional carbon-in-leach process and has an annual plant capacity of 8.5 million tonnes of ore.
