Awaso, in the Western North Region, is Ghana’s only large-scale bauxite mine, in operation since the 1940s. Bauxite is the ore used to make aluminium, and Ghana exports most of it in raw form.
The Ghana Bauxite Company mined about 1.8 million tonnes of bauxite in 2024, up sharply from about 600,000 tonnes in 2022, and is targeting further growth.
Awaso is run by the Ghana Bauxite Company, about 80 percent owned by Ghanaian firm Ofori-Poku Company Ltd, which took over from Bosai Minerals in 2022, with the Government of Ghana holding the rest.
