Tarkwa is the largest open-pit gold mine in Ghana and the country’s second biggest gold producer, operated by Gold Fields in the Western Region. It produced 537,200 ounces of gold in 2024, down about 3 percent from 551,100 ounces in 2023.
Tarkwa is a surface operation using heap-leach and carbon-in-leach processing. A proposed joint venture to combine Tarkwa with the neighbouring Iduapriem mine, which would create one of Africa’s largest gold mines, had not received government approval as of early 2026.
Tarkwa is owned and operated by Gold Fields Ghana Ltd, part of Gold Fields Limited, which is listed on the Johannesburg and New York stock exchanges. The Government of Ghana holds a 10 percent carried interest.
